My Favourite Navaratri Dishes – and how to prepare them
Come Navratri there is a nip in the air and also the warm up for the festivities to begin. This is the time of the year when the season of fasting also begins.
The whole concept of fasting that’s built into our socio-religious lifestyle has a huge bearing on our well-being too. It’s just not about faith or religion, it has a much deeper impact and if followed strictly it can actually leave us a bit healthier through these practices.
However, most of the times I hear my friends and their family members complain because of the limitations that they experience in terms of the vrat food. Many of them wait eagerly for the fasting period to get over so that they can go back to the luxury of having an elaborate meal.
But to me vrat food has shown how creative we can be and also in what way we can utilize our local produce to give a satisfactory meal during this festive season.
So, here are some of the vrat dishes which I personally feel is easy to make and is good to taste. It also adds the much-required variety to the vrat menu.
- Faldhari Kebab: This is a kebab made from raw banana filled with dry fruits. This tasty dish imparts good amount of nutrition in a healthy way. Easy and quick to make, it helps maintain the nutrition level while fasting.
- Shakarkandi (Sweet Potato) ki Chaat: This is a tangy preparation made with sweet potatoes. Since the particular ingredient (sweet Potato) is diabetic-friendly it can be consumed guilt-free by people who have diabetes too.
- Dahi Aloo: As potato is an all-time favourite dish and since this dish is done with the yoghurt, it imparts a particular taste and adds nutrition value while fasting. It also serves as a coolant when served with Kuttu ki Poori, as Kuttu (Buckwheat) heats up the body.
- Kuttu ki Poori: Without this Kuttu(buckwheat) flour dish it seems no vrat is complete specially Navratri. It’s a local produce and is a must to complete a Navratri fast. It has a very typical taste and it tingles the taste buds when served with the Dahi Aloo.
- Lauki (Bottle gourd) Halva: My favourite dish. Lauki as a vegetable is not liked by many. However, when it is made into a halva or kheer, most people who complain about this vegetable are the first ones to polish the dish off the counter.
So, enjoy the dishes while taking yourself one step ahead of being a little healthier without compromising on the taste factor.
