5 Reasons How Food Photography Can Help Your Restaurant Business


In today’s world everything has become visual. If you want to sell anything it must be visually presented to your customer. Having said that, there must also be a strategy to do so.

Since any effort needs some kind of planning/strategy it is all the more reason that for restaurant business which involves selling food, Food Photography becomes an integral and important aspect of this business strategy.

Time and again it has been prophesied that the customer who wants to enjoy a good meal does not necessarily go to a restaurant to eat. The customer goes to a restaurant to get a holistic experience. 

Hence it starts from the eye. The eye experiences and sends the signals which makes the customer interested in the product.Especially when it comes to food.

I as Chef always prophesied that food is eaten first by the eye(literally) after that the olfactory organs get the senses when the food comes close and finally the mouth or the taste buds gets to taste the food and judge how good or bad it is.

 As a restaurant consultant, the first thing I usually suggest my clients would be to get the dishes photographed which they currently are serving at their restaurant. 

Here’s 5 reasons why is it important to get Food Photography done for your restaurant business:

  1. Garner Attention: Whenever a good picture of a dish is shared across  visually in the media, immediately it appeals to the “would be customer”. The customer gets interested to know what is it that makes the dish so tempting. So, it’s good for the person in the restaurant business who can draw the attention of his customer to his product. As a restaurant consultant, I help generate as much interest in the product as possible and garnering attention is the first step towards it.

2. Create a Demand: When the “future client” sees a shot of a great dish, the immediate reaction is I want it. This itself creates a surge in demand in the mind of our “would be customers” which results in business. It’s a commonly known tried and tested fact that anything which is visually appealing, specially Food will definitely create a demand. As human beings we always tend to try out new and exciting dishes. The way we find out whether this dish is exciting or not is through a picture of the dish. This is how the demand is created for that particular dish through Digital photography.

3. Create an Impact: Whenever we see a picture of a particular item, it may be food, clothing, automobiles or even celebrities, it leaves an impact in our mind. Our mind works out a story based on that picture which is then on loop. Hence the impact of a great picture always helps to create a great storey in the mind of our customers. A picture is worth a thousand words is definitely true in the food industry.

4. Image Building: Through a picture we can build the image of the restaurant or food outlet. When the picture is taken in a very good setting with proper ambience and lighting, it conveys a warmth and touches the mind of the beholder. A well taken shot of a dish can very well portray what the restaurant or food outlet is capable of serving. Example, if a nicely taken shot of a lobster is there then the viewer will automatically associate the restaurant with a place which is serving good and fresh seafood. Then whenever this person thinks of going out to a Seafood place, immediately the picture of the lobster will flash in his mind and he will decide to go to that particular restaurant.

5. Creating and Meeting up the Expectations: Through a photograph, we can very easily portray what is the niche or clientele a particular restaurant is catering to. Now if the Image is showing a very classy and well-presented dish, obviously a client who is looking for a quick meal will not visit there, but a person who is planning for an occasion would surely select this place for a dinner. At the same time if the dish represented in the photograph shows a well-presented burger or sandwich, then a person who is planning an anniversary dinner will surely not select that restaurant. However, he will definitely go there when he is taking his lunch break during work. So, this is how a well taken photograph of food can portray the category of client that the outlet wants to Cater to.

A professionally well crafted picture always carries immense potential as this picture can also be worked upon in the post production studio to give the desired effect.
